General:
Perennial herb from corms, with a fibrous covering, often produced from rhizomes; flowering stems branched, 30-60 cm tall.

Leaves:
Basal leaves linear-lanceolate, 30-60 cm long, 1-2.5 cm wide, entire, the tips long-pointed, the midribs conspicuous; stem leaves lacking.

Flowers:
Inflorescence a panicle of spikes with numerous flowers, the spikes usually longer than the leaves; flowers funnel-shaped, yellow to red, the tubes usually curved, the lobes spreading, about equal; stamens free, exserted from the tubes.

Fruits:
Capsules; seeds 3-6.

Habitat / Range

Waste places and forest edges in the lowland zone; rare garden escape on Vancouver Island and the lower mainland; introduced from South Africa.
